On 22 January, Thanos Stratikopoulos from the University of Manchester (UNIMAN) presented a webinar demonstrating TornadoVM running with Eclipse Adoptium Temurin JDK 21, highlighting how modern JVMs can enable heterogeneous GPU execution directly from Java. Through concrete examples, he showed how TornadoVM’s API improves data movement, execution efficiency, and overall throughput for large-scale scientific workloads.
He also discussed TornadoVM’s central role in our project, where it has been significantly optimized to accelerate the processing of extremely high volumes of space data, including workloads related to the GAIA mission, by efficiently offloading compute-intensive tasks to GPUs.
